What is a release?

Releases are “permissions”. That means: people, places or logos visible in an image might be subject to permission requirements by the person or owner of the property pictured. Any images requiring a release for commercial sale must have the proper approvals in place.

There are two types of releases that you could need: model release for images featuring people and property release for properties and intellectual properties such as logos, buildings and  trademarks.

The rule of thumb is that it is always better to attach a release to your photo as it increases the value of your work. So if you can obtain a release, always do so!
